The Chemo Chronicles - 8.1.08

August 3, 2008

Whew, let me tell you.  That was an AWESOME two weeks off of chemo.  But, I did have to go back on Friday to start my 14-day cycle again.  During my 14 days off, I pretty much started to feel normal again.  My appetite calmed down, the chemobrain went away within a couple days (for the most part), and my night sweats stopped!  Yup, that’s right.  They straight up stopped.  I think it was the Prednisone doing it, we’ll see if I start having them again during this go-round.

I was excited to have Jan, my very first chemo nurse, again.  As with the other nurses to this point, this was her first time giving me the Nitrogen Mustard. Read more

Top Entrecard Droppers - July 2008

August 3, 2008

Whilest having a blog documenting my journey through Hodgkin’s, I thought it best to join a blog community, where I can gain exposure of my site, as well as meet others that blog their journies, thoughts, or whatever.  I belong to a few, but I like Entrecard the best, by far.  At Entrecard, you “drop” your card on other people’s blogs.  This let’s them know that they visited you, and will also attract them to your site to reciprocate the drop.  I have made a couple of acquaintances through Entrecard, and have come across some really neat people and sites.  I look forward to meeting more people, and reading more stories that I come across.  The card that I drop on other people’s sites look like this:

On the right hand side of my page you will see an area that says Featured Blog of the Day.  You will see someone else’s card on my site in that area.  When you drop your card on other people’s blogs, you earn Entrecard Credits.  You can use those credits to advertise on other people’s widgets, as you see on mine.  I encourage you to visit their site (just click on their card) as you can find some really neat content.

Within Entrecard there is a statistics area that will tell your top droppers.  (Those that have visited your site the most and dropped their card on your site.)    I wanted to take a minute to thank those that have visited my site and dropped their card.  I hope that they have been able to stay long enough to read some of my story, and am anxious to hear from them in the future as they read more.  My top droppers for July were the following:

The chart shows which 10 Entrecard members dropped their cards on my site the most.  I signed up just a couple weeks ago, so the numbers ARE low, I expect them to be much higher next month.  I will hopefully do a post like this monthly to recognize those that regularly visit my site.  I thank you for your support and your viewing!

What Is Hodgkin’s Lymphoma?

August 3, 2008

Taken straight from the Web MD website.  The actual link to this article can be found below.

What Is Hodgkin’s Disease?

Hodgkin’s disease is a type of lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system.

The lymphatic system is a network of nodes (knots of tissue) connected by vessels. Together they drain fluid and waste products from all the organs and structures of your body. The lymph nodes act as tiny filters, straining out invading organisms and cancerous cells. Organs that contain a lot of lymphatic tissue include the spleen, the thymus gland (in the chest behind the breastbone), the adenoids and tonsils, and the bone marrow.

The lymphatic system also is involved in producing important white blood cells called lymphocytes that help protect you against various infectious invaders, such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi. When the lymphatic system is fighting an active infection, you may notice that some of your lymph nodes and tissue in the area of the infection become swollen and tender. This is normal.

Lymphoma occurs when the lymph-node cells or the lymphocytes begin to multiply uncontrollably, producing malignant cells that have the abnormal ability to invade other tissues throughout your body.

The two main types of lymphoma are Hodgkin’s disease (also called Hodgkin’s lymphoma) and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which are classified by certain unique characteristics of the cancer cells.

Hodgkin’s disease is most common in two different age groups: young adults (ages 15 to 35) and older adults (over age 50). It is somewhat more common in males than females. Because of progress made in the treatment of Hodgkin’s disease, the American Cancer Society states that most people with this cancer be cured with chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

What Causes It?

No one knows for sure why some people develop Hodgkin’s disease. However, scientists have noticed certain associations. For example, people who have had mononucleosis due to infection with Epstein-Barr virus have a greater likelihood of developing Hodgkin’s disease. As do patients with immune deficiencies such as congenital (present at birth) immune deficiency syndromes, those treated with immunosuppressant drugs after organ transplantation and patients infected with the virus that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
